After Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, I said in my sermon on Sunday 8/28/17, “I am praying how we can help… we have an opportunity to show the love of Jesus… at a minimum I would like to fill our trailer and take it up there. You pray with me.” All I can say is “Wow! I didn’t imagine how God would answer that prayer!”
Sunday evening I called Jan Milton of Operation Renewed Hope to see how we could help. He said he could get us $5,000 to buy supplies and take up to Arise Baptist Church which is pastored by Will Cover.
Monday – Pastor Tad setup a GoFundMe account for people to give to our efforts to get supplies for distribution in Houston, made a flyer to go out to parents at Faith Christian Academy, and on Facebook asking folks to drop off supplies and donations until Thursday at 4 PM.
Wednesday – Operation Renewed Hope called and asked us to hold off on spending the $5,000 as they had two truckloads of food that needed transported from Ohio to Houston, TX. We could never fill two tractor trailer loads of food with $5,000!
They asked us if we could help unload and distribute the food on Monday (9/4/2017).
Thursday – We take the $3,000 given by church members, school parents, and people from across the country through the GoFundMe and purchase supplies to add to those people had been dropping off. Ryan Wychopen searched the Valley for donated water (Matt’s Cash & Carry, and Academy made big donations) and we ended up with 6 pallets of water! Bebo distributors donated 500 boxes for packing supplies that families could take home. Clifton Brister got Glick Twins to donate 75 military can openers. All in all, we loaded up two long flatbed trailers for transport the next day.
Friday – After a flat tire in Falfurrias, we delivered the trailers to Arise Baptist Church at 6:00 PM. After 2.5 hours we had unloaded all supplies and put most of them into 75 boxes designed to feed a family of four. Sweaty and tired, we headed back to the Valley.
Saturday – Around 3:30 – 4:00 AM everyone made it to their homes.
Sunday (9/3/17) – some of us will travel up, spend the night at the church, and help unload and distribute a tractor trailer on Monday. I know it is short notice, but please try to help if you can.
There are many needs south of Houston and nearer to us. Keep praying, keep giving to Hurricane Harvey Relief (you can help our church’s efforts here), and be ready to work if you can!
