Last time we marveled at the fact that God loves us with an incomprehensible and unbreakable love. It is hard sometimes when difficulties swirl around us to remember that God loves us. But that is when I need to remind myself of the fifth and final fact that brings me comfort during difficult times: This life is as bad as it gets.
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (Rom. 8:18, ESV)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again… to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you… In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials (1 Peter 1:3–6, ESV)
Here and now may be bad, but there and then will be amazing! We need to follow the example of our Savior.
“let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus…, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1b–2, ESV)
But for those who are not saved, this life is as good as it gets. There is no hope of a better tomorrow for the unsaved. God rejecters will be punished in hell for all eternity.
But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8, ESV)
Christian brothers and sisters, we are not living our lives for our pleasure! We are to live our ransomed lives for God’s glory here as we await an eternity in the presence of our Lord! Consider the chorus of “When We See Christ”
It will be worth it all
When we see Jesus
Life’s trials will seem so small
When we see Christ
One glimpse of His dear face
All sorrow will erase
So bravely run the race
‘Til we see Christ
– Esther Kerr Rusthoi
This life is as bad as it gets. Hang in there! There’s a resurrection coming!
